Sailing Fair Isle
United Kingdom
Приєднався 5 лют 2019
We have sold our house in the UK and moved aboard our boat. She is a classic cutter rigged 48 foot Hans Christian; a very strong blue water boat more than capable of sailing around the world. Just hope we are! We are professional documentary filmmakers working for the BBC and many other TV stations around the world. Broadcasters aren't interested in commissioning sailing programs these days so we are launching our channel online. Sailing Fair Isle is aiming to be more than just a vlog showing our travels. It will be a travel log, but also a documentary style show with proper content and broadcast technical standards. That's the plan anyway. Lets see how it goes.
Can we escape Hurricane Beryl? | Ep118
It's not a position anyone wants to find themselves in. Sitting at anchor with a category 4 hurricane heading straight for you!
The usual mundane problems of life become insignificant and all focus goes to the storm. As everyone knows though a forecast isn't really much more than an educated guess when it comes to weather, there have been major improvements for sure but there is no certainty in this.
The track of the storm is all important a difference of 20 miles can be the difference between experiencing a bit of a stiff 30-40 knot blast and a boat breaking 150 knot mailstrom.
It's not something I fully appreciated until witnessing it first hand but hurricanes are almost closed systems, getting just that little bit away can mean you feel virtually no effect fr4om them whatsoever. On the flip side being within one the effect you will feel is massively dependent on positioning. The strongest winds in a hurricane are on the inner wall, frightening concrete smashing forces, the next strongest is the front right leading edge as the hurricane moves, this 'fat side' can extend out further than elsewhere and is more difficult to escape from.
The good thing about being in a boat of course is that you can move! So when the track of hurricane Beryl moved from crossing near the South coast of St Vincent down to just off the North coast of Grenada this was too close. If the forecast was spot on we would experience strong, but hopefully not unmanageable wings in the South of Grenada. If there was a further 20-30 mile wobble to the South though we would be toast!
So began the mass exodus from Grenada, a fleet of little ships probably not seen on this scale since Dunkirk!
This video tells the whole story and was put together in difficult circumstances as things happened so if you enjoy it please do make the effort to press the subscribe button it costs you nothing and helps us out a lot as UA-cam may actually suggest our videos to people instead of burying them!

Fair Isle Mega Compilation | Season 1 (part 2)

In this second feature length compilation of our adventures we sail into the Med. We take our time though as the Algarve and the Southern Spanish coast are fantastic cruising grounds. Warm flat water most of the the time with the wind coming from the North and lots of safe and beautiful lagoon areas to anchor in. Gibraltar in my opinion is a must see spot for every sailor and although the Spani...

We are gradually working out the best places to go in the Grenadines. After finding what has to be one of the best anchorages we've ever been to in the Tobago Cays in the last episode, we aim to stick to some of the slightly more remote and less visited places between Grenada and St Lucia. We also decide to visit Mustique, the exclusive island of the rich and famous and find one of the gems of ...

If you want to see our journey from the beginning this is a compilation of the best bits from the moment we set off from the UK in May 2019 focusing on the sailing and the places we visit. We hope it will give a flavour of what it's like to live on a boat and sail from country to country. This first installment takes us from Eastbourne, in the South East of England, to Lagos in the Algarve, Por...

Caribbean Champagne sailing | Ep115

We are starting to get a lot of people wanting us to compare the Caribbean with the Mediterranean. Well it's too early for us to give a fair comparison at the moment and it's quite a complex question which will need a dedicated video. One thing's for sure though, the Caribbean has a wonderful reliable sailing breeze. I don't think we've had a day since we've been here that it hasn't blown 15-25...

There's lots to do in Grenada on and off shore. Diving on the underwater statues in the marine park was a real experience and we get out first taste of Lionfish, delicious! As with everything in life there are challenges though as Judy has to make an unexpected trip to the States and I have to deal with getting the boat settled in a very rolly anchorage. Many thanks to Tom and Crispin from Aqua...

The Caribbean cruising adventure begins! Trinidad was lovely, but it's more a place that sailors go to work on their boats than it is a full on cruising destination. Well done Steve, good decision
Let’s take a moment to recognize the fact that Steve did all this alone… AND filmed it for us! Well done.
Glad all ended up well, was wondering if youd head south. Happy Bday, hope Judy made it back on time. Fridge seeemd to work well but seems not too practical for a cruiser (size/capacity). Does that anchor alarm device work when absolute GPS position changes ? If you drag just having relative position wont alarm.
Good decision, well done mate.
paul is the best he solved our fridge problems nobody could!
Happy Birthday Steve. Congratulations for your prudent hurricane planning. 😎
I’ve been thinking about this channel after hearing about the hurricane so was happy to see you posted a video that all was well.
Nice video Steve. Glad you got things squared away in a busy week. Question: Can you try a quality RV refrig on the boat? They make some very good quality ones (much larger than that Ecoflow one) that are isolated and wouldn't require all the boat interfaces like the old one you struggle with. Just curious...
Yes it's just a question of space. If I were designing a boat from scratch I think I would not have an inbuilt fridge but go for some sort of slot in unit that could be replaced as a unit. The only downside to this is you need to find a way to deal with the heat the fridge / freezer produces. When you're in the tropics you don't want anything that adds heat inside and at least the in built units like we have dissipate most of the heat through the keel cooler into the water. One of the reasons I fitted the EcoFlow unit into the sail locker as I don't mind it heating that area.
Happy birthday Steve. I have no doubt that Fair Isle is perfectly capable of taking a Tornado on the nose. However, better safe than sorry.
Happy birthday. Glad you made the decision to head south.
Good to see that you are safe, it was the right decision to sail south. Did you clear out of Grenada or just left and came back in again?
Happy belated birthday Steve! Good call on heading South away from the winds.
friends in the mangroves became attached, everything is fine)
Pure enjoyment 🇨🇦❤ thank u
Watching this video and at the same time praying for your safety!! I dearly hope you're still in safe harbour in St. Lucia!! 🙏🙏🙏
Lovely episode!
It might surprise you, but as a computer based instrumentation designer, I will always have a belt and braces paper back up. For those of us who sail more modest boats on a strict budget we have to be more circumspect. I learnt my lesson depending on pure electronics on a cross channel trip. The alternator failed and by the time I was 10 miles off Alderney my batteries were exhausted. Thank goodness for paper charts and my half hourly recording of position.
It does surprise me yes!
Very informative and fantastic vid of the set and reset. Excellent, thanks
Loved the video. Thanks so much! Always good to have a very clear description and demonstration of how to do things. Other folks use nylon line for snubber and/or bridle since it can stretch more than other types of line. 2:38 LOL. The Beneteau literally just dropped the anchor and called it done. Amazing that people can get on a boat and have no idea what they're doing.
Fantastic film. Great cinematography, music and narrative. Thank you so much!
Wonderful video! Glad that you made it to Trinidad! ♥
Must admit I looked you up on MarineTraffic today , only to see you are on the edge of Beryl in Grenada - hopefully it wasn’t too bad!!
I made a dash for Trinidad, all good. You can see it in Thursdays episode!
Hi how are you getting on with that beast of a hurricane over there? I hope you escaped it.
Yes, hot footed it to Trinidad so all good. Sailing back to Grenada now
@@svfairisle That's good news a bit of a pain to go back to Trinidad but at least your both safe. Take care! Looking forward to next video when you get a chance.
Watching this hurricane passing through atm. Hope you are both OK. X
Yes thanks, sailed to Trinidad to escape it
Fantastic video and great story of your travels. Thank you
I just noticed, who is flying the drone to film you falling into the surf on your dinghy when you go on shore? Does your drone have a temporary autopilot mode?
No I launched it from the dinghy and then left it to hover looking at the part of the beach we were aiming for. The zoom is is done in the edit as I filmed in 4K. I did have to worry about getting the controller swamped as we faffed about landing the dinghy though!
If money is not a problem then this might be the anchor for you butt keep that in mind
It’s all about priorities. We’ve just had a hurricane come through where we are, money doesn’t have the same meaning when you want the best thing to keep you and your home safe
@svfairisle You see that is where you are wrong and it sounds to me like you are someone that doesn't need to worry about money and there are other people that have to worry about every dime they spend . Priorities are one thing and money in the bank is something else. There are people out there cruising on a shoestring and getting by but that doesn't mean you can afford a $3000 + anchor either. So maybe you're right it might be priorities between having a shiny anchor or Provisions to live on
@@n40tom Ive just finished filming boats washed up on the beach in Grenada all of them dragged their inadequate anchors. I wonder how many of the owners thought it's okay because I have a fridge full of food!
@svfairisle That is a very stupid statement you just made and I can tell it came from someone with a loaf of bread under each arm .
I hope you are ok with the hurricane coming 😢
Stay safe guys beryl is a monster storm
I hope you guys scooted south of Granada stay safe
Yes will arrive in Trinidad in a couple of hours
Do not understand why there are so few likes and comments on this video. Sure, it may be long (as was intended), but how can you not enjoy this? Looking forward to part 3!
Very nice and enjoyable… I did think the dolphins made for a little bit of excitement, very professional and well presented. Thank you. 🤣
Thanks for sharing your adventures. )
The Kraken boltless keel, skeg-protected rudder, layout and finish are indeed impressive. Really like the head and especially galley design, which seems highly useable and practical. The inside watch station has great sightlines. The keel and rudder should perform relatively well, sort of a medium aspect ratio. Overall the design seems very well informed by knowledge and experience while also being very pretty, possessing both form and function.
Love your videos and your journalistic interest in accuracy. Thanks for making and sharing them!
Excellent info. Well done.
Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful lifestyle. I’ve really enjoyed the memories of your destinations visited many times by yacht and on motorbike tours. You’ve scored another subscriber. Capt John.
Lady Golem makes me immediately think of Discworld and Terry Pratchett. Going Postal and Making Money features Gladys, a golem that despite being made of clay now has taken on a female persona. In my head, Lady Golem will always be "Gladys".
I can not believe that any competent swimmers hold their noses when jumping into the sea. No need.
1:06:10 this is very interesting. Are you able to set the sails for a course & wind direction, lock the wheel & then FairIsle keeps to a course with no more than one degree variation over a few hours with no intervention? When this happens does FairIsle maintain a set angle to the wind?
It really depends on the wind angle. I can’t do it with the wind aft, really tried in the Atlantic crossing with a following wind all the way over but there’s too much helm movement needed to keep a straight course especially with a big sea swell more in the beam. But with the wind on the beam or even slightly forward I can usually balance the sails to stay straight. It helps if you end up with a degree or two of weather helm locked into the helm which tends to protect you from rounding up in the gusts.
👍👍
Please do more of these longer films
more coming every fortnight
What a fantastic film. I really enjoy the cinematography, music and narrative. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put this all together. It is really appreciated. Alhambra is a truly magnificent place and well worth a visit. Glad you had time to see it also.
Hello guys … must say I throughly enjoyed this episode… terrific narration and excellent editing … absolutely fabulous 🫶🏻
Is that the place they filmed the guns of Navarone
Yes a lot of the spaghetti westerns were filmed in Southern Spain, I have no idea why!
my dad use to drag a fare bit on the west cost off scotland, he had a cutless 27, he had a cqr with full chain, he ended up getting a 35kg bruce never moved once with that haha now trying to lift it was a diferant story!! still got it somewhere, one time it draged was a good point it did as a couple in a dinghy were hanging on to a mooring for there lifes as they coudnt row agenst the tide to get to there boat we only seen them when we moved the boat ferther up the bay to reset the anker!!
👍
Boy I'll have to plan when I see this new format. Great material. OMG "we'll just cut the corner" were my famous last words before my ONLY grounding. Military and Coast Guard were not amused and insisted on pulling us off immediately (maybe they were, behind closed doors). Wel found out shortly it was a firing range. Spain and Portugal so rich and pleasant. Loved the artsy shots of Fair Isle in the morning mist, Judy's Titanic poses never grow old and the videocuts synched to the music. Jeez I''m only 20mins in to it ...
That's a funny way of pronouncing Ibiza. The first syllable is pronounced in English and the last in tryhard Spanish🤣
We've sailed there 3 times now & it's only on the last visit I think we got it right. According to the locals it's 'Ebetha'
According to a Spanish pronunciation video specifically for the word (spoken by Miguel) the correct pronunciation looks like.... He-BEE🐝-tha without the H.
You can soldier onto the main board and run it directly on 12VDC and do away with the router, the newer models dont seem to have as good GPS chip so take a while longer to get a fix
